The trigger sends an event to the Meta Conversions API when a transaction reaches a selected stage in the funnel. Meta sees which leads from ads go on to complete the desired action and begins showing ads to an audience similar to those people.
The event is triggered only for transactions that originated from WhatsApp ads (CTWA—Click to WhatsApp). For other transactions, the trigger will fire but won’t send anything.
The reason lies in how Meta matches the event to the ad. When a person clicks the “Message on WhatsApp” button in an ad, Meta adds a click ID to their first message. The service stores this identifier in the transaction and sends it along with the event. Without the identifier, Meta cannot link the conversion to the ad, so there is nothing to send for transactions from other sources—such as a website, a phone call, or a manually created transaction.
What happens next on Meta’s end:
The more accurately the event describes the lead’s value, the better the result. If you send an event for every new transaction, Meta optimizes for the volume of leads. If you send it only for qualified or paying customers, it optimizes for quality.
A trigger is configured at a specific stage of the sales funnel—the one that you consider to be the target action.
Once saved, the trigger will appear in the stage’s trigger list. You can edit or delete it at any time—this won’t affect events that have already been sent.

Activation (top list) |
Under what transaction action does the trigger fire: when a transaction is created directly at this stage, when it is transferred to this stage from another stage, or in both cases |
The “Upon creation or upon entry” option covers both cases and is suitable for most funnels |
|
Activation (bottom list) |
How long after the trigger fires will the event be sent |
“Immediately” — sent the moment the deal enters the stage. A delay is needed if a deal can quickly move out of the stage and you want to prevent erroneous transfers |
|
Conditions |
Additional filter: The event will be sent only for transactions that meet the specified parameters |
Without conditions, the event is triggered for all transactions from WhatsApp ads that reach the stage. Conditions are added when different types of transactions are mixed in the same stage |
The deal value is derived from the amount. If the amount is not filled in, the event will still be triggered—but without a value, and Meta will not be able to optimize the campaign for revenue.

If you’re just starting optimization, begin with an early-stage event. Meta requires about 50 conversions per week per ad group to exit the learning phase: this volume builds up slowly based on payments, but noticeably faster based on qualified leads.
You can send events from different stages simultaneously—for example, Lead from qualification and Purchase payment. Then Meta can see the entire funnel, and you can choose which event to optimize the campaign for.
This check is performed on Meta’s side, in Events Manager.
The event does not appear in the interface immediately—it usually takes a few minutes, sometimes up to 20–30 minutes. If nothing appears during this time, see the section below.
The trigger fired, but the event didn’t reach Meta. Most often, the transaction didn’t come from a WhatsApp ad. Check the source: the event is only sent for transactions with an ad click ID. Also, make sure the WhatsApp number is linked to your ad account and that the integration with Meta is active.
Can I set up a trigger for multiple stages? Yes. You can configure a separate trigger for each stage with its own event name. This way, you can see the entire funnel in Meta: lead generation, qualification, and payment.
What happens if a transaction returns to a stage again? The trigger will fire again and send another event. If repeat transitions through your funnel are common, configure the trigger to fire only when a transaction comes from a different stage and add a condition to filter out returns.
Do you need a pixel on your website? No. The Conversions API sends events directly from the server; the client’s browser isn’t involved. For CTWA traffic, this is the primary method.
What data is sent to Meta? The ad click ID, event name, time, currency, and transaction amount. Chat history, comments, and card content are not transmitted.
Can events be sent retroactively? No. The trigger sends the event at the moment it is activated. Transactions that occurred before the trigger was set up will not be recorded in Meta.
